Meet Frustration with Gratitude

We’ve all been there. Moments when we get overwhelmed and consumed by the little things. When we forget that we’re beyond fortunate to live the life we live, to be where we are with the people we have. When we forget the endless possibilities and opportunities that life presents us. When we succumb to the simple, low hanging fruit of annoyance and impatience.

There are two opposite yet simultaneously accurate perspectives that are available to us at all times:

1) Nothing matters. We’re here for a split second on this rock spinning and revolving around a star in the middle of the vastness of everything/nothing, and eventually this will all be gone anyway. This could be scary or this can be freeing, but it can be helpful to remember when you’re having a bad day.

2) Everything matters. We only live life once, and our time is both limited and unpredictable. The decisions we make and the experiences we have are all that we’ll ever be, so we need to be thoughtful about how we live our lives. When times are good or you’re striving for something, this could be helpful to remember.

If you’re receiving this newsletter, I can confidently say that your life has advantages, privileges and opportunities that many people currently and throughout history could never dream of. The likelihood of you being who you are — right here, right now — was so astronomically low.

But then, you’re sitting in traffic. And it sucks. And it’s annoying. And you’re stressed…

Failure Doesn’t Need to Impact Confidence

I was recently asked the question, “How do you navigate failure not having an impact on confidence?”

Confidence is the belief in your ability to be successful. That begs the question, how are we defining success?

If we set a goal to win, and we lose, then we failed and it may hurt our confidence in our ability to win again. If we set a goal to improve, and we lose, then we failed but since we’re trying to get better, failure may be seen as a great opportunity to do so. It shines a light on what we need to adjust, and it’s a measuring stick moment that allows us to track progress towards the goal we’re striving for.
