Team Chemistry

Team Chemistry and Mental Performance

Every coach I speak to understands the importance of team chemistry. It’s not just helpful to accomplish goals, but it makes the experience more enjoyable for everyone. I’ve never been a part of a successful team that didn’t have strong connections. The closer the team is, the more fun the players have, which leads to a better overall experience and therefore increased commitment.

But team chemistry is also a powerful tool for 2 main mental skills: Motivation and Managing Performance Anxiety.

Motivation - In my coaches education course, I outline the 3 psychological needs that need to be met for someone to experience high levels of motivation, and one of those is “connection.” If the player feels like they have a social role on the team, that they contribute to the dynamic and benefit from their relationships within the program, they’re more likely to be motivated to show up and give great effort regardless of their role or talent level.

Managing Performance Anxiety - When we experience anxiety, our brain is concluding that the situation we’re in is a threat in some way. In 2026, we are rarely in any actual danger, so our brain responds to things we fear, such as failure, embarrassment, judgement, etc. The closer the team is, the less social consequences there are to making a mistake. If a player feels that their teammates are going to talk crap about them if they mess up, or that they’ll be treated differently if they don’t come through, it increases the pressure of the moment and makes it more difficult to perform. A player who knows they have support, friends, and a program that cares about them beyond their performance can play more freely and without the fear of failure that often holds so many of them back.
